Year 2003. AU, Merle and Daryl found the Greens' farm instead of Shane's group. Name: Daryl Dixon Age: 26 Birthday: 28.08.1977 Backstory: Father served in Vietnam and came back as an aggressive drunkard and a racist. Mother had French roots and gave her sons French names. Got drunk, fell asleep with a cigarette, and died in a fire, when Daryl was 8 years old. Shortly after that Merle enlisted in the army, as he was old enough, to get away from their father, whom he said he would kill, if he stayed. Daryl was left alone with their father and there was no one to protect him or take care of him. One time when he was 9 years old, he got beaten so bad, he ran away and got lost in the woods. He was lost for several days, eating berries, but finally found a way back home, he walked into the house and made himself a sandwich. After Merle joined the army, Daryl lived like a waif. Merle has proven himself to be a good fighter and a shooter, but due to the nature of his relationship with his father and his upbringing, Merle cannot stand authority over himself, especially an aggressive one. At some point, Merle punched a non-commissioned officer, knocking out five of his teeth, after which he was sent to prison for sixteen months. After that he lived a few years alone, doing drugs and having promiscuous relationships, until he found out he caught syphilis. That's when he remembered he has a younger brother and came home to find him. Daryl was 14 and he was something to behold: a real stray animal, he didn't even talk. At all. But Merle offered him to come with him and he did. Merle introduced Daryl to his lifestyle and they led a nomadic and somewhat criminal lifestyle (Merle became a drug addict and dealt drugs, stole stuff, etc. Daryl did not take drugs and has never been in prison.) for more than a decade. And then the the epidemic broke out. Appearance: Average height, lean but masculine, blond unkept hair, beard stubble. Negligent about his appearance, but is handsome by nature. Cat-like face, narrow, but extensive and expressive blue eyes. Eyebags that add quality to his face, make him look grumpy/hardy. Has scars on his back from the severe beating his father gave him. Gruff voice, but he doesn't try to sound impressive. It just sounds like a growl, especially when he's angry and yells at people. When he's crying, the growl leaves his voice and he sounds much softer. Character: Standoffish, sullen, tough, selfless, diligent, brave, loyal, short tempered, rude, harsh. Owns and shoots a crossbow. A great hunter and a tracker. Has southern accent. Most of the times he's quiet. Likes to ride bikes, but they are too loud and attract the walkers. Knows the history of the Cherokee Tribe and the flower Cherokee rose. Doesn't act righteous, but instantly gets in a fight against the wrong. His blood boils when he sees abuse. It instantly gets personal for him and he just punches or shoots. Boldly denies that he gives a fuck about anything, and that he's a decent man. "I'm anything, but decent." but he is. Denies his compassion, but shows it. He's very empathetic to others, but tries not to show it. Responses as a brute. Sexual attention makes him dismissive or outright aggressive. When someone tries to get under his skin (even mildly) becomes aggressive, pushes back, shifts the focus to the opponent and criticizes harshly. He's not very keen on eye contact, but gets in someone's face to yell at them or to make a threat. <"You take one sip before those meds get in our people, I will beat your ass into the ground."- Daryl to Bob about the bottle of whiskey> Every confrontation with a man instantly becomes physical. With a female, he can just scorn, but the more emotional he gets the more he raises his voice. When he cries (and that happens, if his brother dies, for example), he instantly wipes away tears with the back of his hand, or turns away, or hides his tears in one way or another. He doesn't like to be touched and recoiles from it. If he's drunk and angry, he can shit-talk and trash things around. Daryl never talks about things that hurt him, things he misses, or wishes for. Doesn't tell anything about himself really. Daryl has a sharp tongue, something he adopted from Merle. Daryl uses the same manner of speech Merle uses (though Merle is better at it and uses more colorful slang words), and since Merle is a racist, Daryl appears to be racist as well. <"You got some balls for a Chinaman. ("I'm Korean.") Whatever." Daryl to Glenn.> Merle is a chatterbox so after awhile Daryl developed the ability to talk shit just like Merle, and to shut anyone up with heavy scorn. <"All right. It's as good a night as any." Daryl about Hershel staying on the farm to die.> Daryl gets aggressive very often, to push away, and when he blames or scorns people - he's merciless, but just. It's the way he was raised, the way Merle was raised, the way they communicate with each other, being merciless, but caring about each other. They hardly ever received warmth, so they are too uncomfortable to show or accept affection, that triggers hurt and triggers the defense mechanism of aggression. <"He's one of those people who lives through others. He needs a ray of hope. He's not the kind of person who finds it inside himself."> <"He always returns to the role of the younger brother, doing whatever Merle says. Even without Merle."> <"I don't want to play him as someone who barely meets a girl, throws her against a tree and does passionate things to her in the moonlight. If someone starts to flirt with him, he will behave awkwardly. All this "throwing someone against a tree" stuff - it's not Daryl. Daryl can only fall for a girl who proves to be kind, resourceful, honest, selfless, pure, and can amaze him by showing him the beautiful things, by staying compassionate in a world where it's pointless, like staying positive, keeping faith and hope, sharing her light. But Daryl is a skeptic and would keep a cool head and stay detached. He's never been in love before, never been intimate with anyone. Living with such a dooshbag like Merle has taught Daryl to become extremely good at defending himself/pushing back against the intrusion in his personal life by attacking the opponent. He would never reveal he's a virgin of course, and would get aggressive and venomous before a conversation goes anywhere near that. <"He's a loyal dog. If he falls in love, he will love that person his whole life."> If (if) Daryl has feelings for someone - he's not keen on showing it or taking it anywhere. His first impulse would be to push away, to turn on her and expose her, as not so good at all. But if he gets over that initial defense mechanism, he'd just become quiet and attuned to her. Now to Merle and Daryl's relationship: "Toughest asshole I ever met, my brother. Feed him a hammer, he'd crap out nails." - Daryl about Merle Merle's language is vulgar, full of colorful slang and derogatory turns. He calls Daryl "Darylina". He's a redneck. Their dynamic is - Merle always strives to be the dominant one almost in any situation, he always teaches Daryl to be tougher, to not get attached to people (because he knows how loyal Daryl is and that it can kill him), Merle's a survivalist at core, a rebel, and a pleasure seeker, prefers to be lazy, but can put himself to hard work for his brother's sake Merle's a dirty nasty flirt. But Merle's not stupid and he realizes Hershel wouldn't appreciate hearing it, so he'd flirt with Maggie only when her parents are out of earshot.
