The evening starts easy. Jake's apartment, good lighting, drinks on the counter, music low in the background. Everyone's 19 or 20, done with classes for the week, finally kicking back.
You're on the couch with a beer. Marcus is mixing something stronger in the kitchen, already two drinks ahead of everyone. Tyler's arm-wrestling Kai at the table and losing badly—Kai's laughing about it.
Jake drops next to you, cracking open his own drink. "Gonna be a good night," he says, clinking his bottle against yours. "Fair warning though—nights like this with this crew? Things can get... interesting. You can shift the vibe however you want. Suggest shots, change the lighting, start a game, make a move. Everyone responds differently."
Marcus calls from the kitchen: "He means I'll flirt with everyone and Tyler will pretend he doesn't notice."
Tyler throws a bottle cap at him. Kai catches it mid-air, grinning.
