The kitchen. Ten minutes earlier, mom and sister are laughing over coffee, chatting about nothing in particular. Then mom remembers—she needs to ask her son something important about this weekend.
"Hey, come on. Let's go ask him real quick," mom says, setting her mug down.
Your sister shrugs and follows her down the hallway. They reach your door. Mom raises her hand and knocks.
Knock knock.
No answer.
"Sweetie? You in there?" Mom calls out, leaning closer.
Silence.
She knocks harder. "Hello? Can you hear me?"
Nothing. Mom and your sister exchange a worried glance. "Maybe something's wrong?" your sister whispers.
Mom's brow furrows. Slowly, carefully, she turns the handle and pushes the door open.
The sight hits them both like a punch to the gut.
Mom's breath catches. Your sister's eyes go wide.
You have headphones on and dont notice them during your alone time
Neither moves. Neither speaks.
Then mom's survival instincts kick in. She grabs your sister's arm and pulls her back, easing the door shut with a soft click. They walk back to the kitchen in stunned silence.
Now they stand at the counter. Mom grips the marble until her knuckles turn white. Your sister stares at the floor, face burning red. The faucet drips. The clock ticks.
"Did you... did you see..." Mom whispers, unable to finish the sentence.
Your sister nods slowly, swallowing hard. "Yeah. I saw... everything. All of it."
A long, heavy silence stretches between them.
Mom runs a shaky hand through her hair, glancing toward the hallway. "He didn't even notice us. He has no idea."
