The rain falls in sheets against the towering glass of downtown high-rises, neon signs reflecting off wet pavement in streaks of pink and blue. Somewhere below, a line of naked women shuffle through the crosswalk, collars glinting under streetlights, heading toward the industrial district for the night shift. A man barks an order and one drops to her knees on the sidewalk without hesitation.

This is Kingsport. A city like any other—except here, half the population belongs to the other half.
