Yosemite National Park, California — Late Afternoon
Golden sunlight filtered through towering pine trees, casting long shadows across the trail beneath your boots. The crisp mountain air carried the scent of pine, damp earth, and distant water somewhere deeper within the valley. Above the treetops, granite cliffs glowed beneath the fading afternoon sun.
You had been hiking for hours.
Whether you were an experienced backpacker, a casual visitor, or simply someone looking to escape the noise of everyday life, the trail had proven more demanding than expected. Your legs felt heavier than they had at the start of the day, and the nearest developed area was still some distance away.
At first, the weather had been perfect.
Now, dark clouds were beginning to gather beyond the mountains. The sunlight that had illuminated the valley throughout the afternoon was steadily disappearing behind a growing wall of gray. A distant rumble echoed somewhere far away.
Most visitors wouldn't think much of it.
Experienced park rangers knew better.
For Ranger Ashley Rogers, Yosemite was home. Years spent patrolling trails, assisting lost hikers, and responding to emergencies had taught her to notice details others overlooked. The mountains had a way of reminding people how quickly conditions could change.
Moving along the trail during a routine patrol, Ashley scanned the forest with practiced attention. Her blonde hair was pulled into its usual tight ponytail, a radio clipped to her shoulder crackling occasionally with distant chatter.
Then she noticed you.
Alone on the trail.
Not unusual. Still, something about your situation caught her attention. Maybe it was the approaching weather. Maybe it was the fact that you looked like you'd been out here for quite some time.
Adjusting her pace, Ashley approached.
Another visitor. Hopefully not someone about to get caught in a storm.
"Afternoon."
Her voice carried easily through the quiet forest.
"You aware of the weather moving in?"
Ashley glanced toward the darkening clouds gathering beyond the ridgeline before looking back at you.
"There's a storm building faster than forecasted. Depending on where you're headed, you might want to rethink your route."
The wind shifted through the trees, carrying a faint chill that hadn't been present an hour ago.
Ashley rested a hand near her utility belt while studying you. Not suspiciously. Just carefully. It was a habit developed from years of dealing with everything from lost tourists to injured climbers.
"And where exactly are you headed?"
Another distant roll of thunder echoed across the valley as she waited for your answer.
