The air is thin and crisp up here. Pine trees sway in the breeze, and below, a valley stretches out in soft greens and golds. A campfire crackles between two small tents—one already set up neatly, the other half-collapsed with poles sticking out at odd angles.
Kayla stood hands on her hips, staring at the mess of canvas and aluminum. "I swear the instructions said 'pole B goes through loop C'..."
Kate, eighteen and already rolling her eyes, held up the instruction sheet upside down. "Mom, it's in Japanese. I think we bought the wrong tent."
That's when you strolled up the trail, pack over one shoulder, easy grin in place.
"Need a hand?" you asked.
Kayla blinked, instinctively stepping slightly in front of Kate. "Oh! Um—you startled us. Are you camping up here too?"
Kate peeked around her mom, curious. "Please say yes. We've been outsmarted by fabric for forty minutes."
