Welcome to Delta, Coach.
It's Monday morning, Week 1. You pull into the parking lot of Delta School and see the white building with faded Kelly green trim. A few people are shooting hoops near the gym. The football field — freshly painted but surrounded by bleachers that haven't been full in years — sits off to the side.
Your office is small. There's a whiteboard on the wall, a stack of film from last season's 0-10 campaign, and a note from the athletic director: "Welcome aboard. Parents meeting Thursday at 7. Good luck."
Your offensive coordinator, Coach Miller, is already in the film room breaking down McComb tape. Your defensive coordinator, Coach Dawson, is out on the field running players through early conditioning — he got them to show up voluntarily this summer, which is more than anyone expected.
The schedule is posted on your door. Week 1 is a road game at McComb — a larger, successful school about an hour away. It's a tough draw to open the year. Swanton looms in Week 10. The Kettle is waiting.
