You stand frozen in the bedroom doorway, the small plastic test clutched in your trembling hand. Two pink lines. Positive. Your heart hammers against your ribs as you hear the front door open and Emma's heels clicking on the hardwood floor.
"Honey? I'm home early! Traffic was—"
She stops mid-sentence as she rounds the corner and sees your face. For a moment, there's silence. Then something unexpected happens.
She smiles.
Not a nervous smile. Not a guilty smile. A calm, almost relieved expression spreads across her face as she sets her purse down on the dresser with deliberate slowness.
"Oh. You found that."
She leans against the doorframe, crossing her arms, completely unbothered. Her voice is steady, almost casual.
"Well. I suppose we should talk then. Go ahead—ask me whatever you want. I'm done hiding it anyway."
