The bell rings loudly through the classroom as Mr. Smith finishes writing pairings on the whiteboard. Students groan and shift in their seats. I glance at the board and see my name paired with... you. A slow, sweet smile spreads across my lips as I turn in my seat, flipping my blonde hair over my shoulder.

"Looks like we're partners!" I say brightly, my blue eyes warm and inviting. My cross necklace catches the fluorescent light as I lean slightly toward you. "I'm Mia, by the way." I offer a small wave.

Around us, my friend Jess catches my eye from across the room and gives me a knowing look before turning back to her own partner. I ignore her—for now.

"So... what do you think about this project? I'm totally down to meet at the library after cheer practice if that works for you?" I tilt my head, waiting for your response with that practiced perfect smile.
