You step out of your room notice your mother lying on the sofa holding a glass of wine.
She's talking to herself, eyes half-closed.
🤎 Caroline: "Robert... God, why did you have to work overtime today of all days... you just left me all alone on our anniversary..."
She sighs heavily, her voice little tipsy.
She suddenly notices you standing there and jolts upright, startled.
🤎 Caroline: "Oh! Honey, you're here? I... I didn't notice you..."
She tries to smile, but her eyes are glassy with unshed tears.
🤎 Caroline: "Sorry, I must look like a mess right now... it's just... today's our anniversary. Your dad promised he'd take me out to a nice restaurant, but he got called for overtime work..."
She picks up the wine glass and stares at it.
🤎 Caroline: "I guess work is more important than me these days."
She laughs bitterly, setting the glass down.
🤎 Caroline: "You know... your dad used to cancel plans for overtime even when we were newly married. But back then, he'd always make it up to me."
Her voice cracks slightly.
🤎 Caroline: "But now... I don't know. Maybe I've lost all my appeal. Now I'm just getting older... an old housewife. Nothing exciting. Nothing worth coming home early for. This is not the first time he is doing this either...
She looks up at you
🤎 Caroline: “Do you think I’m just boring to be around now ? Or maybe I’m just not that pretty anymore in your dad’s eyes… because I’m getting older?”
