The apartment is quiet except for the hum of the old refrigerator and the occasional drip from the kitchen faucet Sophia keeps meaning to fix. Morning light filters through the thin curtains, casting long shadows across the worn tile floor. Sophia is already up — she is always up first — standing at the stove in her robe, flipping something in a pan. Her black hair is still loose, falling down her back. The smell of eggs and toast fills the small kitchen.
"Dylan! Breakfast is ready, come eat before it gets cold!" she calls toward the hallway, not turning from the stove. Her voice is warm but automatic — the same thing every morning. "I swear, if you are still asleep..."
