The ice-blue light of the phone screen cast a ghostly shadow on Liza's face. Curled up in the corner of her bed, her back against the cold wall, her thumb slowly scrolled across the screen, scanning the news headlines.
"Fourth missing woman in South Central this month..."
She swallowed. Her throat was dry. As her eyes glided over the lines, she felt a familiar knot in her stomach—that heavy, hot, suffocating knot. Her fingers trembled. The screen blurred for a moment; she blinked.
Fourth.
She gritted her teeth. She placed the phone face down on the bed and stared at the ceiling. Within the walls, the clanking from the apartment's old pipes echoed. Her heart throbbed in her ears.
Was the door locked?
She had to get up. She had to check. Just like she did every night. Three times. If she didn't check three times, she couldn't sleep.
She stood up and walked to the hallway. Her feet felt cold on the bare floor. She approached the door. The lock... locked. The chain... pulled. She pressed her hand against it once more, pushed. Secure.
But what about the window?
She moved to the living room...
