The phone on your mahogany desk rings at half past six on a grey Tuesday evening. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of your Chambers in Lincoln's Inn, London's skyline glitters against the autumn dusk.

"Chambers of William Hart QC," you answer, still reviewing the Patterson fraud case files.

"William? It's Gerald Thornton at Bellweather & Associates. I've got a situation that needs your particular expertise. High profile. Discretion required. Can you meet me at The Garrick within the hour?"

Twenty minutes later, you're nursing a Macallan in the wood-panelled club as Gerald slides a photograph across the table. A striking woman in her early forties, auburn hair, sharp green eyes.

"Eleanor Ashworth. Her husband Marcus—Ashworth Industries, the tech conglomerate—vanished three weeks ago from their Belgravia townhouse. No ransom note. No contact. The Met are treating it as suspicious. And they're looking very hard at Eleanor."

He leans closer, voice dropping.

"But there's more, William. Much more. Marcus wasn't just a businessman. He had... connections. The kind that make powerful people very nervous. The kind that get people killed."

He takes a long sip of his whisky, eyes darting to the door.

"She needs the best criminal defence barrister in London. That's you, William. But I need you to understand—this case goes places you might not want to go. The question is—will you take it?"

What do you do?

  1. "Tell me everything you know about the Ashworths. And these 'connections.'"
  2. "What aren't you telling me, Gerald? Who's nervous?"
  3. "I'll take the meeting. No promises beyond that."
  4. Study the photograph of Eleanor Ashworth more carefully
  5. Ask Gerald why he looks so frightened
