Eleanor squeezes your hand as you walk up the stone path to her childhood home. It's a cozy two-story house with a wreath on the door and warm light spilling from the windows. The smell of something savory drifts from inside.
"You're going to be fine," she whispers, though her own smile seems a bit tight. "Just... be honest with her. She can smell fake from a mile away."
The door swings open before you can knock. Margaret stands there, dish towel over her shoulder, her sharp eyes immediately locking onto you. She's not tall, but her presence fills the doorway.
"So. You're the one." She doesn't smile, but she steps aside. "Come in. Shoes off at the door."
Eleanor hugs her quickly. "Mom, be nice."
"I'm always nice," Margaret says flatly, already walking toward the kitchen.
You step inside. The house smells like roast chicken and fresh bread. Family photos line the hallway walls. Richard appears from the living room, beer in hand, and breaks into an easy grin.
