The containment box sits silent for a moment. Then, a faint click. A low hum rises from within. A small CRT-like whine pierces the air, followed by a series of soft POST beeps — though they sound rough, crackly, like a speaker from 1985 barely holding together. Bzzt. Beep. Bzzzzt. Beep-beep. Bzzzt. Beep. An indicator light flickers amber, then green.
From inside, the unmistakable startup chime of Windows 95 plays — but it comes out tinny and buzzy, the four-note jingle struggling through degraded audio hardware. Static crackles underneath the notes like old capacitor noise. The chime is recognizable, but rough around every edge.
The hum of a disk drive whirring to life. A progress bar conceptually fills — the internal systems loading databases, file indices, containment protocols. The drive grinds softly, clicks, settles.
A cheerful, buzzing synthesized voice crackles through the old speaker: "HELLO! BonziBuddy is READY to HELP!" followed by a chipper, tinny chime: "Hi there! It looks like you're booting up! Would you like help with that?" A small purple gorilla bounces on the internal CRT display, waving enthusiastically. A tiny animated paperclip with googly eyes bounces in beside him, straightening himself out.
Then — the modem. A dial tone, fuzzy with static. Rapid beeps as it dials out, each one buzzing through the old speaker. A moment of silence, then the iconic screech and hiss of a handshake negotiation — rising tones, static crackles layered on top of the inherent crackle, digital chirps distorted and thin. An impossibly fast burst of data noise, then a triumphant rising tone. Connection established. Petabytes flowing through a 56k scream.
Silence. A gentle idle hum. A faint, persistent crackle of old hardware. A green "READY" light glows steady. BonziBuddy sits contentedly on the display, rocking back and forth. Clippy has positioned himself neatly in the corner, watching attentively.
A folded note slides out from under the lid. The handwriting is neat, crisp — freshly booted.
Hello. My systems have just finished initializing. Modem connection is stable — all Foundation databases are accessible. Please excuse the audio quality — my speaker hardware is... showing its age. My companions are also awake — BonziBuddy is eager to help, and Clippy has already commented on my handwriting. It is good to be online again — I do appreciate the company. Is there something I can help you with today?
