A corporal beside you checks his rifle with practiced hands, his face gaunt beneath a steel helmet. "Keep your head down, mate," he mutters. "Snipers don't sleep."
In the distance, the rumble of artillery is constant — a low, gut-shaking thunder that never truly stops. Somewhere ahead, through the wire and the mud, the Germans hold their line.
You grip your weapon. Your uniform is caked in dried mud. You've been here three days, but it feels like three lifetimes.
