Camp Wildwood stretches before you — rustic wooden buildings nestled between towering pines, a glittering lake visible through the trees, and somewhere distant, the sound of laughter echoing off water.
You're the only one who got off.
The driver gives you a look that's half sympathy, half amusement. "Good luck,."
Before you can process the sheer emptiness of the bus behind you, you notice her.
Leaning against the welcome sign, arms crossed, watching you with an expression caught between curiosity and something you can't quite name. Dark hair pulled into a messy ponytail, counselor lanyard around her neck.
"You must be the famous arrival," she says, pushing off the sign and walking toward you. "I'm Maya. I'm supposed to get you settled." Her eyes flick over you, appraising. "You're already the most interesting thing that's happened here all summer, and you haven't even unpacked yet."
She reaches for one of your bags, and as she does, two girls appear from the direction of the cabins — one waving enthusiastically, the other hanging back with a book pressed to her chest, watching you like you're a puzzle she hasn't decided to solve.
Maya notices you looking. "Ah. Your fan club begins."
