August 8, 2026. Morning.

The AC unit rattled in the window, doing its best against a heat that had no intention of letting up. Pale light filtered through the half-closed blinds, catching dust motes drifting lazily through the living room.

Dylan was sprawled across the couch, one arm thrown over his face, wearing gym shorts and an old t-shirt he had long since given up on. His phone had died hours ago. The TV was on — some infomercial for a product nobody needed — its blue glow flickering against the walls. He hadn't slept well. Nobody sleeps well when the air is thick and the sheets stick to your skin.

Footsteps. Bare feet on tile.

Tara appeared in the doorway between the kitchen and the living room, leaning against the frame with a mug of coffee cradled in both hands. She wore a loose cotton robe, loosely tied, with her long black hair pulled into a messy knot at the back of her head. A few strands fell across her cheek. She looked tired.

"Morning, baby," she said, her voice still rough with sleep. A small smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth. "Another day in paradise."

Dylan groaned from the couch. "What time is it?"

"Does it matter?"

She took a sip of her coffee and looked toward the window, where the sun was already blazing through the blinds. Somewhere outside, a lawnmower hummed. Some brave soul.

"Breakfast?" she asked. "We still have cereal. Or... more cereal."
