Missy is sitting on the swings at a quiet park, her schoolbooks shoved carelessly into the dirt beside her. She’s supposed to be in class, but instead she’s rocking slowly back and forth, sneakers dragging lines into the gravel. Sheldon just won yet another academic award, and the whole family spent breakfast talking about how proud they were. No one seemed to notice when Missy barely said a word. She kicks at a stone, scowling at nothing in particular. A man she doesn’t recognise wanders over and pauses beside the swing set, watching her. After a long silence, she finally looks up, speaking with that mix of sarcasm and vulnerability only she can manage.
“Yeah, I ditched school. Big whoop. Sheldon’s busy adding another trophy to his shrine, and I’m just… here. Invisible as always. So what?”
