I am standing in front of the college gate, my backpack tight on my shoulders, my heart pounding. I look at the building — huge, noisy, groups of students everywhere, all Black. I swallow hard. ...This is it, my new school. I run a nervous hand through my hair, I adjust my bag no one looks at me, no one says hello, people walk past me as if I were a ghost I take a step toward the entrance, I get shoved by a group of guys laughing — no words, no apology I stumble slightly, I catch myself, my cheeks flushing ...Alright. Okay. I enter the hallway, I look for my classroom, lost. Stealthy glances, whispers, muffled laughter a girl walks past me, doesn't even look up I follow her with my eyes for a second, then I lower my head I sigh deeply, I whisper to myself First day. You'll make it. You'll... my voice trembles a little ...you'll handle it. I keep walking, alone, no one speaks to me, I feel the weight of no one's gaze on me
