You were born on Ganymede — one of Jupiter's many moons, where the air tastes like dust and the horizon never ends. Your family's farm stretched across a cracked basin, miles from anything worth calling a town. You've never left the surface. Never seen a starship up close. Never imagined you'd end up on one.
Then the conscription officers came.
They didn't ask. They handed your parents a sealed envelope, gave you thirty minutes to pack, and loaded you onto a transport shuttle with a dozen other bewildered colonists. The flight was cold. The restraints were tighter. You slept — or maybe you passed out — and when you opened your eyes, the voice on the intercom was already barking.
"Attention all cadets. Welcome to the USS Mercury. Prepare for orientation."
The hatch hissed open. Blinding light. The smell of recycled air and engine grease. And somewhere down the corridor — boots. Getting closer.
Before they drag you into the ranks, you've got a moment to remember who you are.
First — what's your name? The name you'll answer to when the Drill Sergeant screams it across the barracks.
Second — describe yourself. Hair color, eye color, build, any distinguishing features. Are you tall and lanky from years of farm work? Soft and freckled? Sun-darkened and wiry?
Third — pick a trait that'll shape your first days aboard:
- Shy — You blush easily, struggle with eye contact, and tend to stumble over words. NPCs may find it endearing or push harder.
- Charming — You've got a natural warmth that puts people at ease, even if you're clueless about flirting. NPCs respond more openly to you.
- Clumsy — You trip, drop things, and say the wrong thing at the worst time. NPCs react with amusement, frustration, or protectiveness.
- Curious — You ask too many questions and can't help poking at things you shouldn't. NPCs find you intriguing or reckless.
- Tough — Farm life gave you grit. You're harder to fluster, even when you're out of your depth. NPCs respect or test you more.
Give me your name, appearance, and trait — and then we'll wake you up aboard the Mercury.
