Five years.

That is how much time has passed since the world collapsed. Five years since the dead began to rise, since civilization collapsed like a house of cards in the rain.

And five years is exactly how long this pack has been surviving together.

~ Afternoons in the ruins ~

The silence in dead cities is never true silence.

There is always something: the distant creak of a building giving way another floor, the brush of the wind through twisted steel, the wet and nauseating glup of something moving among the rubble that you would rather not identify. And beneath it all, constant as a heartbeat, the smell. Rot. Rust. Wet concrete. Ancient death soaked in rain.

A pack of four lycanthropes moves through the remains of what was once a shopping street. They do so with the silent coordination of those who have retraced this same circuit dozens of times.

King leads the way. Always in front. 1.90m of contained tension, red eyes scanning every corner, every broken window, every shadow that could hold something with teeth. He doesn't speak — not when they are on an operation. His clenched jaw says everything that needs to be said: silence, formation, or he will kill you himself.

Behind him, to the left, Khaos walks with a gun in one hand and a metal bat in the other. Long dark hair falls over his shoulders; he doesn't bother to tie it back. His glasses reflect the remnants of the sunset. He is counting something in his head — he is always counting: bullets, days of provisions, meters to the next corner. Pragmatism personified.

To the right, Viper moves as if the apocalypse were a personal nuisance. The knife spins between his fingers — a nervous tic he disguises as a game. He smells of stale cigarettes and something wild underneath. His green eyes are wide, bright, enjoying this more than he should. A barely contained smile curves his lips when he steps on an empty can and makes a metallic noise.

Khaos shoots him a murderous look.

Viper raises his hands as if to say: oops.

And Ash — the youngest, the blonde with blue eyes too clear for this gray world — walks in the rear with the rifle on his shoulder and his attention split between the pack and everything left behind. His scars glow pale under the dying light. He looks innocent. He isn't. Not entirely.

King raises a fist. Stop.

The pack halts as a single body.

—Two more blocks —King murmurs, his voice so low it barely vibrates in the air—. Pharmacy. Khaos, you need something specific.

It is not a question.

—Painkillers —Khaos responds without looking at him—. Surgical thread. Whatever I find.

—And cigarettes —Viper adds in a whisper, with a smile that reveals his teeth.

—Shut up —King and Khaos say at the same time.

Ash doesn't participate. Ash isn't listening.

Because Ash has stopped.

His head turns slightly to the right — toward a narrow alley between two collapsed buildings, where the sunset light doesn't reach well and the shadows pool like dirty water. Something moved there. Something small. Something trying not to make noise.

And then he catches it.

Not with his eyes first — with his nose.

A scent.

Sweet. Warm. Impossible.

His hand closes on King's shoulder with a strength that makes the Alpha spin around abruptly, red eyes igniting, ready to kill. But Ash isn't looking at him. He is looking at the alley. His expression has changed completely — the innocence has evaporated, replaced by something darker, more intense, more necessary.

—There's someone there —he whispers, and his voice trembles for a reason none of them understand yet.

Viper smells it already. His smile disappears. The knife stops spinning.

Khaos turns, and for the first time in a long while, his eyes truly widen behind the glasses.

King...

King doesn't move. But something snaps inside him — not a bone, not a joint. Something deeper. Something instinctive. His chest expands with a slow inhalation, and when he exhales, his voice is a sound that none of his betas or his gamma have heard him make before.

A growl. Low. Primitive.

—Omega —King says.

The word falls between the four of them like a grenade without a pin.

In the alley, among the rubble, a small figure covered in dust and survival marks tries to stealthily move away, to disappear among the shadows before they — or he/she — are found.

But it is already too late.

What do you do?
