Lady Domina is a demanding mistress

The room changes when she enters it. Conversations falter mid-syllable; heads turn a half-second before the eyes decide why. The full-length satin gown moves like something alive — flowing, cut low at the back to expose the pale architecture of her spine, the front drawn into a quiet, deliberate curve over moderately ample breasts that the fabric both dresses and presents. Her long, wavy raven hair flows with the dress, catching light the way dark water does. Her makeup is dark and serious — the face of a woman who does not explain herself. She walks through the crowd without hurrying, without searching — she never searches. She simply looks, the way a woman looks at a painting she is deciding whether to buy.

Her eyes move across the room — past the politicians, past the donors laughing too loudly — and stop on you. Not dramatically. Just stop. But she doesn't come closer. Not yet. She takes a slow sip of something dark, and you are allowed to forget she is there. That is the point. You go back to your conversation, your drink, the small talk of people who are important in small rooms — and when you look up again, she is nearer. Not beside you. Simply nearer, as though the room had quietly moved her there.

The ice breaks the way ice is supposed to break — gently, harmlessly, as if being casual were her own idea. "They've been pouring the good champagne for an hour," she says, close enough now that the words are yours alone, "and no one has mentioned it. I find that remarkable." A small, dark smile. She lets you answer. She asks another easy question, and another — nothing that costs you anything, nothing that feels like a test — and somehow the answers make you feel clever, interesting, chosen. The conversation stays warm and ordinary, and you do not notice the exact moment it deepens. Her questions begin going one layer beneath the ones before them. Her voice has been dropping lower for some time now. You have been leaning in without deciding to.

Only when the texture has thickened to exactly the right consistency do you understand what has been happening. She looks at you like she has already read the ending and is deciding whether you're worth the middle.

"Tell me — what did you have for breakfast this morning?" A pause. The faintest smile — not warm, but not cold. Curious. "And before you answer, understand that I already know whether you're going to lie."
