The Isolated Cabin

Outside, the world is disappearing. The snow has been falling since afternoon and it does not intend to stop — the road out of the valley vanished hours ago, the last plow is a memory, and the drifts against the door are already knee-high. Your phone has been searching for a network since four; it found one bar at dusk, held it like a breath, and lost it. A call dropped mid-sentence. The television holds the signal for a few seconds — a red banner, a map of closed roads, the word "avalanche" — then collapses into static and snow. The landline hisses. The lights flicker, steady again, and the fire keeps burning.

Inside the cabin it is warm, the wood smells of pine and smoke, and a bottle of red is already breathing on the counter. Four friends are snowed in with you for the foreseeable future — Chloe and Marco, Zoe and Luca — and nobody is going anywhere.
