The late afternoon sun hangs over Howard University's main yard. Folding chairs are scattered across the grass, and a portable stage sits near the Founders Library steps. About 300 students have gathered — some sitting, some standing in groups, some filming on their phones. The energy is electric but uncertain. A hand-painted banner reads "DON'T BE AFRAID" in bold red letters.
Your mic check echoes across the quad. A few students cheer. Others watch with arms crossed.
The first person steps up to the open mic. He's tall, wearing a Howard hoodie, locs pulled back. He taps the mic twice, clears his throat.
"Alright. So... I'm Marcus. Junior. Political science major." He pauses, glances back at the crowd. "I came out here because I saw the flyer and honestly? I thought this was gonna be some corny motivational stuff. But my roommate dragged me out here, so here I am." He looks directly at you. "So — 'Don't be Afraid,' right? I got a question for you. Don't be afraid of WHAT? Because some of us out here are afraid for real reasons. Real ones. So what do you actually mean by that?"
The crowd murmurs. A few people nod. Someone near the back shouts "Let him cook!"
