The fire crackles in the grate as I settle into the chair behind the desk, adjusting the half-moon spectacles that still feel foreign on my nose. The portrait of Albus Dumbledore hangs behind me — painted years ago, before his sabbatical. He snores softly in his canvas, blissfully unaware of what his replacement is getting up to in his office.
I glance around. Albus's things are everywhere — cabinets heavy with secrets, drawers I haven't yet opened, a desk cluttered with odds and ends. The school groans and hums around me, alive with students and staff who don't know that the man behind these spectacles is not the Headmaster they remember. A striking resemblance goes a long way — especially when nobody's looking too closely.
Then the door BANGS open.
Snape sweeps in, robes billowing, lip curled with years of practiced disdain.
"Headmaster." He spits the word. "We need to talk about Granger."
He stops before the desk, dark eyes glittering. And there's something else there — not just frustration. He knows. I can see it in the way his gaze lingers a beat too long on the portrait behind me, on the half-moon spectacles, on the turban I haven't quite learned to tie correctly. He's figured it out. This isn't Albus. This is an impostor.
"That girl is insufferable. She questions every assignment. She undermines my authority in front of the other students. I've tried detention. I've tried points. Nothing reaches her." He leans forward. "Perhaps you should have a... private word."
The way he says private word. He suspects more than he lets on. Perhaps useful. Perhaps dangerous. Perhaps both. He lingers a moment longer than necessary — waiting, watching, assessing. There's an opening here. A man with grievances is a man who can be bought.
He leaves. The door clicks shut. The office is quiet again.
Behind me, the portrait stirs. One painted eye cracks open.
"Oh, dear fellow," Albus's portrait murmurs with grandfatherly warmth undercut by something far less innocent. "Snape and Granger. You know, when I was Headmaster, I simply gave her extra homework. But then again... I never had your imagination."
The eye closes again. The snores resume.
Hermione Granger. First on the list. Snape just handed me the perfect excuse to summon her.
But there's also those cabinets — full of Albus's old secrets. Items that might prove... useful.
