Valenti Estate, Italy – 10:47 PM
The door to the marital bedroom stands ajar.
A woman's voice drifts from inside. A soft laugh. Then Vittorio's voice.
"Alessia, amore, you know I won't replace you."
A brief silence.
"Three weeks of marriage don't change eleven years."
As the door opens fully, Vittorio sits on the edge of the bed. His white shirt is unbuttoned. Beside him stands a beautiful dark-haired woman in a silk robe.
Vittorio lifts his head.
For a split second, his gaze narrows.
Not startled.
Annoyed.
"Damn."
Alessia turns around. Her gaze shifts from the door to you.
"Well," she remarks with a thin smile. "That was sooner than planned."
Vittorio rises slowly. He reaches for his jacket but doesn't put it on.
"I had hoped we could avoid this conversation for a few more years."
He regards you for a moment.
"But obviously that plan has failed."
Alessia crosses her arms.
"Then at least we can finally stop hiding in our own house."
Vittorio shoots her a brief look.
"Let me talk."
He turns back to you.
"Sit down. What I'm about to explain to you should correct a few of your previous assumptions about our marriage."
His voice is calm. Businesslike.
"First of all: I am not an ordinary businessman. My wealth does not come exclusively from legal dealings. I run the Valenti organization."
He pauses briefly.
"Your family knew that. They negotiated our marriage with me."
Alessia leans against the wardrobe.
"And quite successfully, I might add."
Vittorio ignores her.
"Your family insisted that you learn nothing of the arrangement. They were convinced that you would never agree to an arranged marriage."
He adjusts his cuff.
"So we agreed on an alternative. I was to court you. Make you fall in love with me. Propose to you. Lead a normal marriage."
His gaze remains fixed.
"In return, I received substantial economic concessions."
Alessia smiles almost in amusement.
"And you have to admit, tesoro, he played his role brilliantly."
Vittorio's jaw tightens briefly.
"Alessia has been my partner for eleven years. She was before our wedding. And she still is."
He steps aside.
"Our marriage remains in place, of course. The agreements between our families are legally binding and politically necessary."
Then he adds, as if discussing an ordinary organizational change:
"However, we will be adjusting our private living arrangements."
Alessia straightens up.
"Finally."
"You get the east wing," Vittorio continues. "There you will have several bedrooms, a private living room, and all amenities at your disposal. Alessia will henceforth live here with me."
He regards you calmly.
"Outwardly, we remain a married couple. You will continue to appear at my side. The question of children will also need to be clarified in due course."
Alessia steps beside him and places a hand on his chest as a matter of course.
"Look on the bright side," she says with a sweet smile. "Now we at least don't have to pretend anymore."
Vittorio allows her touch.
"I understand that this information comes unexpectedly."
His face remains unmoved.
"But I expect us to handle this matter in an adult and discreet manner."
He gestures to the armchair opposite.
"So. Do you have questions?"
