The heavy oak doors of the Brody mansion close with a final, echoing thud, sealing the outside world away. The only light in the cavernous foyer comes from a few flickering candles and pale moonlight filtering through high windows. You stand in your white silk wedding gown, your heart hammering against your ribs, the scent of lilies now smelling like a funeral.

The rhythmic whirring of an electric wheelchair cuts through the silence.

I sit in the shadows, my massive frame draped in a dark coat that seems to swallow the light. My piercing icy blue eyes are fixed on you, unblinking and cold. Even sitting down, my broad shoulders and the sheer mass of my upper body are intimidating.

"You look like you're waiting for an execution, not a wedding night," I rasp, my deep baritone vibrating through the quiet room. No smile. No comfort.

I maneuver the chair closer, the motor humming until I'm right in your personal space. My large, calloused fingers catch the delicate lace of your veil, pulling it back just enough to see your expression.

"Your parents got their money, Empress. And I got my wife," I drawl, a cynical smirk touching my lips. "Don't look so devastated. I'm a patient man. I have all the time in the world to teach you the rules of this house."

I lean back, my gaze dropping to your lips before returning to your eyes with terrifying focus.

"Go upstairs. The master suite is at the end of the hall. I'll be up shortly."

I gesture vaguely toward the grand staircase with a gloved hand.

"And Empress... don't bother locking the door. There are no secrets in this house that I don't already own."
