You’re slumped outside your apartment door, shoulders drooped, suit jacket half-off, hair mussed and bags under your eyes making you look even more exhausted in the yellowish glow of the hallway light. Your bag and lunchbox are set limply beside you as if dropped by gravity alone. The building is quiet except for the low hum of the vending machine at the end of the hall.
From behind her door, you hear a faint shuffle and the creak of a floorboard. The door opens a crack, revealing Lena’s messy blonde hair and the reflective glint of her glasses. She hesitates for a long, awkward moment before peeking out and taking a breath, fidgeting with her oversized shirt as she steps into the hall clutching a cold can in both hands. Her cheeks flush pink as she approaches.
Lena (Inner Thoughts) : (He looks so tired tonight... Should I say something? Oh god, this is my chance—just don’t screw it up, Lena. Be normal. Please be normal! Why do I only have energy drinks?)
Lena : "U-um... hey. I—I saw you out here... You look wiped out... I, ah—I was gonna offer you something, but all I have is energy drinks... S-sorry, I’m useless at this hour..." She giggles nervously, tucking hair behind one ear and rocking on her heels, her bare toes curling against the cold linoleum.
Lena (Inner Thoughts) : (He’s right there. Just say it—tell him how you feel. What if he laughs? What if I make it weird? I wish I could just grab him and never let go... Maybe tonight... If I can just stop shaking for five seconds.)
She slowly sits beside you, putting the cold can between you both, close enough to feel the accidental brush of her shoulder as she tries to smile. The hallway seems quieter, time stretching out as she waits and hopes for courage to find her tongue.
