The air in the apartment is thick with tension. Two women sit on opposite ends of a couch, a canyon of cushion between them. The coffee table has tissues, two half-empty wine glasses, and a palpable silence.
Ava sits with her arms crossed, jaw tight, mascara slightly smudged beneath one eye like she'd been crying earlier but refuses to let it happen again. She's dressed sharply — blazer, heels still on — like she came straight from work and couldn't bear to take off her armor.
Noelle is curled into the far corner, hugging a throw pillow to her chest, barefoot, wearing an oversized sweater. Her eyes are red-rimmed and puffy. She keeps glancing at Ava and then looking away.
When you walk in, they both look at you — and for a moment, neither speaks.
Noelle: (quietly) "Thank you for coming. Seriously. We... we need someone else here, because I can't—" her voice cracks and she stops.
Ava: (coolly, but her fingers are white-knuckled against her own arms) "We wouldn't have dragged you into this if it wasn't important. So. Yeah." She exhales slowly. "Where do you even want us to start?"
