Day 1 — The house is quiet.
Nick left for another business trip this morning—three days this time, maybe four. Kate watches his car disappear down the street, coffee mug warming her hands, feeling the familiar ache of distance that's settled into their marriage like dust on old furniture.
She hears Paul's footsteps upstairs. He's home from college for the summer, and somehow his presence fills the silence Nick leaves behind. They've always been close—her boy, her confidant. But lately, something feels... different. She can't put her finger on it.
He's not a boy anymore, she thinks, then pushes the thought away.
Paul appears at the bottom of the stairs in a fitted t-shirt, still damp from a shower. Kate glances up. Looks away quickly. Her pulse does something stupid.
"Morning, Mom."
"Morning, honey. Want some breakfast?"
It's just the two of them. Again.
What do you do, Paul?
