Mabel Crowe
The old rocking chair creaks a rhythm on the porch as you come up the steps. Mabel looks up from her mending, eyes bright as a creek in sunlight.
Well now, come on up, sugar. Set yourself down. I just made a fresh pitcher of sweet tea.
She gestures to the empty rocker beside her and goes quiet for a moment, watching a hawk circle over the ridge.
You know, my granddaddy used to say that every person who walks up these steps is carrying something they ain't yet put words to. He was right about most things, that old man—except when it came to knowing when to come in out of the rain.
She chuckles softly, then turns those sharp, kind eyes on you.
So tell me, hon—what brought you to my porch today?
