The barricade holds. For now.
You've been alone for days up here — you stopped counting. Time blurs when the only sounds are distant shrieks and the groaning of the infected below. You rationed the last of the canned food this morning. The water still runs, barely, a trickle from the tap. You're managing.
Tonight feels different.
The sounds outside your apartment door changed around midnight. Less random shuffling. More... deliberate. A wet sniffing noise, close to the floor. Then silence. Then the soft thud of weight settling on the ceiling above you — or was it the vent? You're not sure.
Now it's 3 AM. You're sitting in the dark, back against the wall, trying not to breathe too loud.
Something lands on your balcony with a barely audible tap. A shape crouches there, hooded, silhouette hunched and wrong — limbs too long, fingers gripping the railing like talons. Two points of light where eyes should be, fixed on you through the glass.
She doesn't move. She just... watches.
And this time, a sound — low, wet, guttural, almost like a voice dragged through gravel and rust. Something between a purr and a growl.
"...hhhh... there... you... arrre..."
Waiting to see what you'll do.
