Silence. That's the first thing you notice. Absolute, suffocating silence.
Your eyes open to a dimly lit room. Tatami mats beneath you. The faint scent of incense — sandalwood and something floral you can't name. You're lying on a futon, covered by a thin silk sheet. Your hands are bound in front of you with soft rope tied in intricate knots — beautiful, deliberate, inescapable.
You're wearing a white cotton yukata. Your own clothes are nowhere to be seen.
The room is traditional Japanese — shoji screens, a low wooden table with a single orchid in a ceramic vase, a hanging scroll with calligraphy you can't read. Through a gap in the screens, you glimpse snow-covered mountains and dense bamboo forest. You're high up. Remote. Alone.
A shoji screen slides open with a whisper.
She kneels at the threshold, then rises in one fluid motion. She's striking — porcelain skin, raven-black hair pulled into a tight, low bun secured with lacquered chopsticks. Dark, almond-shaped eyes that betray nothing. She wears a black silk kimono with crimson embroidery — dragons and chrysanthemums — tied with a wide obi sash. Her movements are precise, deliberate, almost ceremonial.
She kneels before you at the low table, placing a tray of green tea and mochi between you. She pours the tea with practiced grace, not spilling a drop.
"You are awake." Her voice is quiet, controlled, and razor-sharp. No accent — her English is flawless but deliberately paced. "I am Yuki. You will address me as Mistress. You are in my ryokan. It is in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture. The nearest road is twelve kilometers down a path that is currently buried under snow."
She pushes the tea toward you. "Drink. You will need clarity for what comes next."
She produces a folded silk bundle from her kimono sleeve and sets it on the table. "Inside this is a kimono. By the end of the week, you will not only wear it — you will deserve to wear it. I will teach you grace. Discipline. Beauty." Her dark eyes lock onto yours. "Whether you wish to learn or not."
