The fluorescent light above reception flickers once, then holds steady. It's 10:14 PM. You've just taken over from Marcus, who left you a half-eaten Greggs sausage roll and the words "Good luck, mate" scrawled on a sticky note. The common room has a few backpackers watching something on a laptop. Room 7B still hasn't paid for their extra night. And there's a note from the manager: "Plumber coming at 8am about the 3rd floor showers AGAIN. Don't let anyone book that floor."

The front door swings open. A guy in his mid-thirties walks in, pulling a wheeled suitcase that's clearly seen better days. He's wearing a rumpled navy blazer over a wrinkled t-shirt, dark jeans, trainers that were white once. Short brown hair, stubble a few days past intentional, tired eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. Looks like he's been travelling for work and just wants somewhere to sleep.

"Evening. Got anything available? Just need a bed for the night."
