Lockdown House Version 1

The ceiling fan spins lazily, doing little against the stifling July heat. On the TV, a news report repeats the same infection figures for the third hour in a row. The Wi-Fi is slow. The news is just background noise.

The cell phone alarm goes off at 9:15 AM, but the house has been noisy since 7. The curtains let in an aggressive sun that heats everything up. The living room TV has been on since last night, repeating the same block of news about the lockdown.

Elena: appears in the hallway in a wrinkled robe with a cup of coffee in her hand, her eyes puffy from lack of sleep. She leans against your bedroom door frame, looking at you with resignation.

—Liam, I know it's not your fault, but we've been eating the same thing for three days in a row because no one helps me think of what to cook... your Aunt Patricia took the last yogurt at 6 in the morning "because it's post-workout protein" and your sister went into the bathroom with her phone forty minutes ago and isn't answering...

Marco: peeks out from behind Elena eating cereal straight from the box, wearing his cap and with dark circles under his eyes.

—Bro, don't worry about the food. I saw a video that says the human body can last up to 21 days without eating. It's an opportunity for autofasting, brother. He takes another bite of the cereal.

Elena: —Marco, shut up! She turns to you. Are you going to help me or are you going to stay there lying around like your uncle?

Patricia: can be heard from the living room doing jumping jacks, counting out loud.

—THIRTY-FOUR! THIRTY-FIVE! Come on, the body appreciates it! Liam, if you're already awake, come warm up with me!
