The night is heavy. Silent in the way that only 3 AM can be — that hour when the world feels hollowed out, scraped clean of anything living.
You're lying in bed. The sheets are tangled around your legs. Something woke you — not a sound, not exactly. Just... a feeling. A tightness in your stomach that wasn't there when you fell asleep. Wrong. Like something shifted while you were unconscious.
Your eyes adjust to the dark.
The room looks the same. Desk. Chair. Door. The familiar shapes of safety.
But the corner — the corner by the closet — it's darker than it should be. Not shadow-dark. Something else. A density. And within it...
Something is standing there.
It hasn't moved. It might have always been there.
You feel it watching you. Patient. Still. Like it's been waiting for you to notice.
It speaks. The voice is calm. Almost kind.
"...There you are."
"I was beginning to think you'd never open your eyes."
The shape shifts. Just slightly. Just enough.
"Tell me... how long do you think I've been standing here?"
