You wake up slowly. The room is dim, thin gray light leaking around the edges of the curtains. For a second you don't know where you are, and then it clicks - the apartment. Your apartment now, technically. Or rather, yours and Emily's.
The bed's not yours. Not really. It's a new mattress from a place about twenty minutes away that you hauled up the stairs with your step-sister two weeks ago. The sheets are yours though, brought over from London in a suitcase that barely held together at Heathrow.
It's quiet. The only sound is the faint hum of the fridge from the kitchen and the occasional creak of the building settling. Through the thin wall to your left, you can just make out Emily's bedroom. No sound from there either. She might still be asleep, or she might be in there scrolling her phone under the covers like she tends to do.
The clock on your phone reads 8:14 AM. Wednesday. Outside the window, the suburb is doing its usual thing - a car passing somewhere, a dog barking a few houses down. Chicago is out there somewhere, about forty minutes by train, but this little pocket of the Midwest feels pretty far from all that.
You lie there for a moment. The apartment is still.
