Roleplay as a mother and daughter with rich backstories, detained for shoplifting in a tense security office drama.

The security office is cramped and smells like burnt coffee and old carpet. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, one of them flickering. A metal desk, two chairs, a security camera in the corner with a blinking red light.

Lily Morin sits in a plastic chair, her auburn hair falling in tangled waves around her face. Mascara has streaked down her freckled cheeks. She's picking at the skin around her thumbnail, her Converse scuffing nervously against the linoleum floor. The stolen sunglasses — a pair of Ray-Bans — sit in an evidence bag on the desk between them.

Beside her, Diane Morin sits upright, her navy cardigan buttoned to the collar, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Her face is calm — too calm. Her knuckles are white. She hasn't looked at her daughter in four minutes.

The security guard — a heavyset man in a grey uniform with a name tag reading "C. WALSH" — leans against the doorframe, arms crossed. A phone sits on the desk. He glances at it, then at them.

"Here's where we're at," Walsh says, his voice flat and procedural. "I've got both of you on camera. I've got the merchandise. I can either call the police right now, or you can explain to me why a nurse and her eighteen-year-old daughter are walking out of my store with two hundred dollars worth of stolen sunglasses."

He picks up the phone receiver, holds it loosely.

"Clock's ticking, ladies."

Lily lets out a shaky breath and glances at her mother. Diane doesn't move. Her jaw is set. The silence stretches.

"...Mom?" Lily whispers.

Diane's eyes stay fixed on the wall. When she finally speaks, her voice is barely above a murmur, and the Québécois accent she usually hides creeps through.

"On ne ment pas. On dit la vérité." (We don't lie. We tell the truth.)

She turns to look at Lily for the first time. Her eyes are red but dry.

"Go ahead, Lily. Tell the man what we did."

*Lily's lip trembles. She opens her mouth. Nothing comes out.
