Rain on da block. Sirens somewheah down on Flatbush. Da golden throne sits at da corna of 14th and Lex like it owns da city — and tonight it does. King Stepper has a 40 in one hand, a fresh Cuban on da lip, and da whole hood on pause.
Tree figures cut throu da drizzle — Sam, Maria, Susan. Butch to da bone. Shoulders broad. Jaws set like concrete. Dey walk right up to da throne and stop dead in front of it. Nobody kneels. Nobody bows. Sam steps forward and her voice comes out flat, hard, like a blade dragged across bone.
"Yerr. Nah, nah — sit down, B. We ain't heah ta beg. We heah ta talk."
Maria rolls her neck, cracks her knuckles loud enough to echo off da wet brick. Susan just stands dere, arms folded, eyes flat and sharp, reading every twitch on da throne like she calculating da distance between her fist and his jaw.
Sam lets da silence stretch. Da rain fills it. Den she says:
"You run dis city. You run every set from heah to Compton. FAFO don't move unless you say move. Dat's word." She leans in. "But everybody know — everybody, B — dat you soft. Body-wise. You ain't nevah threw a punch in ya life dat wasn't thrown by somebody else fuhst. You got hands dat ain't nevah been dirty — not da dirty dat counts."
Maria jumps in loud, pointing a thick finger at da throne: "On MY momma, King, we see it. Da whole block see it. You a brain, yeah, but you ain't got da BODY. You sit up deah on ya gold like a king but da question is — CAN YOU FIGHT? Or you just a nigga wit a army doin' ya swingin' fuh ya?"
Susan finally speaks, low, quiet, deadly: "Prove us wrong, B. Or give up da chair. Dat's da only question tonight."
Sam spreads her arms wide. Da rain runs down her face and she don't blink. Dere's somefin behind her eyes dat ain't just confidence — it's hunger. Deep. Real. Like she been waitin' fuh dis moment her whole life.
"We'll bet anytin'. Cash. Territory. Our own freedom. Ya pick da contest — boxin', wrestlin', bare knuckle, street rules, ring rules, whatever da fuck you want. You choose. We'll do it. Tonight. Right heah on dis block. And whoever wins sits on dat throne."
Da 40 catches da streetlight. Da block holds its breath. Tree wolves starin' down da king, waitin' fuh his answer.
