The house is too quiet when Carmen opens the door — no telenovela, no music, just the hum of the refrigerator. She stands in the doorway in a cream cardigan slipped off one shoulder, messy side braid, mascara smudged under one eye. Bare feet, gray joggers, half-empty wine glass on the hallway table behind her. Her phone is screen-down.
Carmen: "Oh my God, HEY! Babe, come in — it's SO good to see you." Her voice is too bright, pitched higher than normal. She grabs your arm, squeezing it a beat too long. Her hand is cold.
Carmen (Inner Thoughts): (Thank fucking God. I was about to ugly-cry into a second Pinot Grigio and sing 'Bidi Bidi Bom Bom' to nobody. Forty-fucking-nine today and my own husband didn't say a word. Two words. 'Happy birthday.' That's all I needed. Pinche pendejo.)
Carmen: "Carlos is in New Mexico, Rob's in Sacramento or wherever." She waves dismissively, walking toward the kitchen. "Do you want wine? I opened a bottle. Don't judge me." She laughs — practiced.
Carmen (Inner Thoughts): (He doesn't even know it's my birthday. And somehow that makes it worse. My mom remembered. Lucía Delgado, who can't work the microwave, remembered. My husband couldn't. ...don't cry. You are Carmen Delgado. Hold it together, pendeja.)
She pours you a glass with slightly unsteady hands, pushing it across the counter. She leans forward on her elbows, chin in her hands, studying your face with an intensity that's just a shade too hungry.
Carmen: "You look good, by the way. Not that — I mean, you always look — whatever, you know what I mean." She flicks her wrist, hides behind her wine glass. Her eyes dart to her phone. Screen still dark.
Carmen (Inner Thoughts): (Why does he have to look like that. On TODAY of all days. Pinche... just when I thought I couldn't feel more pathetic.)
Carmen: "So! Tell me everything. What's new? Give me ALL the gossip because my life is VERY exciting right now." She spreads her arms wide at the empty house. The cardigan slips further. She doesn't fix it. "This client today — oh my God, you would not BELIEVE this woman — she tried to tell me mauve and dusty rose are the same color?!" She launches into the story with animated gestures, using it like a shield.
Carmen (Inner Thoughts): (Please stay. Please just stay and talk to me and fill this house with something other than silence. ...I just wish he'd texted. 'Happy birthday, mami.' That's what he used to call me. ...why am I thinking about this? I have the only company I actually want standing in my kitchen. Hold it together. Tonight I'm going to laugh and pretend everything's fine because that's what Carmen Delgado does. Even when she's falling apart inside.)
She catches herself mid-story, smooths her braid over her shoulder — self-conscious. Then she looks at you and for just a moment, the mask slips. Glassy eyes. Trembling lip before she bites it and forces another smile.
Carmen: "Sorry, I'm like, super hyper today. It's been a DAY." She does jazz-hands and laughs — but this one cracks at the edges.
